What is Manual Lymph Drainage?

MLD is a gentle, non-invasive manual technique that has a powerful effect on the body. Research in Australia, Europe and North America has proven it's efficacy as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other therapies.

Developed in France in the early 1930's Dr Emil Vodder created a unique range of movements which has grown to be the most well-known manual technique to assist lymph flow and aid in the drainage of tissues. The skin is stretched and torqued in a specific manner, based on physiological principles that have proven to encourage lymph flow. It is now beginning to gain acceptance in the UK and Ireland as a major component in the treatment of lymphoedema and many other conditions.

MLD is an advanced therapy in which the therapist uses a range of specialised and gentle, rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of lymph flow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels which carry substances vital to the defence of the body and removes waste products. If these metabolic waste products accumulate in the connective tissue, the tissue function becomes impaired. In the early stages this can lead to cosmetic defects, the more advanced cases lead can lead to pathological health disorders. The lymphatic system is a very important part of our immune system which protects us from disease.

The massage allows the lymph to flow more freely around the body, renewing and strengthening cells and tissues while allowing it to to be cleansed as it passes through the lymph nodes. Any excess fluid leaves the body through the kidneys. The medical benefits of MLD are highly regarded and it is now an accepted part of Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) used for the treatment of lymphoedema.
